JOHN CAVENER

John undertook his legal studies at Northumbria University where in graduated with first class honours in MLaw and completed his LPC. In the final year of his degree, John produced a dissertation entitled ‘To what extent do the changes and suggested reform to domestic mental capacity law since 2005, comply with European human rights law?’

His own curiosity regarding the Law Commission’s proposed ‘Liberty Protection Safeguards’ and how they may operate in practice inspired him to write this comprehensive thesis. He worked diligently to produce the final draft which was praised for its articulate and commanding manner.

Facilitating access to justice is important to John. Whilst at university he worked in the Student Law Office, helping clients with employment matters on a pro-bono basis. Now he is working in the mental health field, John deems the advice and assistance he gives clients regarding First-tier Tribunals, Hospital Managers’ Hearings and the role of the Nearest Relative as an important part of his role. He welcomes any opportunity to help those detained under the Mental Health Act access their statutory and human rights.

In his spare time, John enjoys listening to and performing music. He plays saxophone and has a particular interest in roots genres.
