LAILA RAHMAN

SOLICITOR | COURT OF PROTECTION DEPARTMENT | ALDERSHOT

During my academic period I obtained LLB in law studying at Nottingham Trent University and latterly at Guildhall University (currently known as Metropolitan University) where I gained the Legal Practice Course. I was admitted to the roll as a solicitor in 2003.

However, my legal career began as a court Legal Adviser to Magistrates and Judges in various courts in London.  For 19 years I advised the court on adult and youth crime, obtaining a wealth of experience in the criminal justice system, serving as a civil servant in the Ministry of Justice.  I also gained experience in mental health, judicial review and case stated.

My experience led me to teaching the Legal Practice course to university students where I taught criminal law, employment law and advocacy. I supervised research students as well as students in the Family pro bono clinic.

In my spare time I sit as a Family Magistrate deciding on sensitive matters making important decisions on children’s futures relating to contact with the non-resident parent. Throughout my adult life, I have undertaken various voluntary work in the UK and abroad such as charity work with children, volunteering as a Samaritan, mental health champion at work, supervisor in the university’s family law clinic, and as a School Governor.

Combining my legal career and my desire to serve the public and my community brought me to public law. I now assist vulnerable people who lack mental capacity and are deprived of their liberty, amounting to a breach of their human rights. I help parties to understand the complexities of the law and procedure, and work with local authorities, advocates and Official Solicitors. If necessary, I will apply to the Court of Protection for judgment on the person’s welfare and will work hard to get a resolution on their desired outcome and in their best interest.

In my spare time I enjoy the outdoors, visiting different countries and absorbing various cultures and food, cooking, DIY, theatres and volunteering.
