MELISSA PETTY

Solicitor

Melissa completed her LLB Law Honours Degree at the University of Hull in 2017 gaining an Upper Second Class.  She went on to complete the Legal Practice Course and Masters of Law (LLM) in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Law, Leeds with Distinction grade.

Throughout her studies she completed work placements in various law firms gaining valuable experience in immigration law, private client and land law. During her LPC, Melissa worked as an Outreach Volunteer for the Citizen’s Advice Witness Service where she provided emotional and practical support to witnesses at Hull Crown Court. As an Outreach volunteer Melissa would particularly work with vulnerable witnesses by helping them understand the court process and accompanying them whilst they give their live evidence at court.

Upon finishing her LPC LLM she worked as a Land, Acquisition and Development Paralegal. Melissa left this role to take part in an internship in Chengdu, China on the Generation UK Programme funded by British Council. Melissa spent 2 months in Chengdu working as a Marketing and Communication Intern whilst also completing weekly Mandarin classes. Melissa found this experience very rewarding and was able to develop her communication and language skills and confidence in working and interacting with people from different backgrounds and countries. Melissa was also able to travel to different parts of China including Xian and Beijing and learn a lot about the Chinese culture and their business etiquette.

After coming back from China, Melissa accepted a role at Bison Solicitors as a Mental Health Paralegal. Melissa has found this role very active and rewarding, and particularly appreciates how during this role she is able to help protect human rights on a daily basis.

Melissa has wanted to do work which helps and advocates the rights of people from an early age. Since the age of 4, Melissa was engaged in her family’s charity Mama Melissa Foundation, a charity based in Kenya that advocates children’s education especially girls and promotes breast cancer awareness in Kenya. Melissa’s work with Mama Melissa Foundation has been recognised and in 2018 Melissa was awarded a Young Achievers Award by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF). During this award ceremony Melissa gave a 10-minute presentation at the House of Parliament about her work with Mama Melissa Foundation and her work in relation to youth empowerment particularly among the Kenyan Diaspora community. Since accepting the award Melissa has engaged with a variety of UPF events including International Women’s Day 2019 at House of Parliament and Dream It Real 2020 organised by Coach Foundation and UK Youth.

In her spare time Melissa is a passionate traveller and has recently started a blog for travel tips and inspiration. Whether it be completing a German exchange in high school, working two summers at an American Summer Camp, or interning in China, Melissa enjoys immersing herself in new cultures and environments and working alongside different people.
